How far is it take from Hanoi to Sapa?

The distance from Hanoi to Sapa is approximately 320 kilometers (around 200 miles) when traveling by road. The journey typically takes around 5 to 6 hours to transfer from Hanoi to Sapa by private limousine.

Here are three possible routes:

Via Noi Bai - Lao Cai Expressway

This highway is a much faster and more convenient way to travel between the two cities than the old route, which used to take much longer. The expressway is about 245 kilometers long and takes approximately 4.5 hours to drive.  

The Noi Bai - Lao Cai Expressway is a modern highway with four lanes of traffic. It is a scenic route that winds its way through the mountains of northern Vietnam.

Along the way, you can see some of the most beautiful scenery in the country, including rice terraces, mountains, and rivers. If you plan a trip from Hanoi to Sapa, we highly recommend taking the Noi Bai - Lao Cai Expressway. It is the best way to get between the two cities.

Via National Highway 70 and Provincial Road 153:

  • Head northwest on Vo Nguyen Giap Road
  • Take a left to merge onto National Highway 3
  • Continue on National Highway 3 for about 80 kilometers
  • Take a right onto National Highway 70 and continue for about 90 kilometers
  • Turn right onto Provincial Road 153 and continue for about 40 kilometers
  • Turn left onto Fansipan Street and continue for about 3 kilometers to reach Sapa town center.

Via National Highway 32 and Provincial Road 279:

  • Head northwest on Vo Nguyen Giap Road
  • Take a left to merge onto National Highway 3
  • Continue on National Highway 3 for about 70 kilometers
  • Turn right onto National Highway 32 and continue for about 100 kilometers
  • Turn left onto Provincial Road 279 and continue for about 40 kilometers
  • Turn right onto Fansipan Street and continue for about 3 kilometers to reach Sapa town center.

Note that traffic conditions and road closures can affect the travel time and route. It’s recommended to check the latest traffic updates and road conditions before you transfer from Hanoi airport to Sapa.


How do I get to Sapa from Hanoi?


1. Bus from Hanoi to Sapa

One of the most convenient and inexpensive ways to transfer Hanoi To Sapa is to take the bus. Depending on the bus you take and the rush-hour traffic, plan to spend around 5–6 hours on the road.

2. Train from Hanoi to Sapa

All trains traveling along the Hanoi-Lao Cai route move at night. A trip takes about 8 hours, departing at 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Every day, there are 2 trains departing from Hanoi to Lao Cai and vice versa.
