One of Vietnam's five native monkey species, the golden-headed langur, once called Cat Ba home. so the Cat Ba island is one of the top of 10 Vietnam tropical island.
Also included are the eastern black crested gibbon, the gray-shanked douc langur, the snub-nosed monkey, and the Delacour's langur.
The golden-headed langur, also called the Cat Ba langur, became extinct as the human population on Cat Ba Island rose and hunting intensified.
The Allwetterzoo Münster in Germany collaborated with the Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations and Cat Ba National Park in Vietnam in 2000 to save the last 50 of the species from extinction.

In 2019, the Leipzig Zoo in Germany will host the project.
Worker Mai Sy Luan, 41, spends 15 days a month driving all around the island to check on the langurs. "I observe them and record any changes. For the past 14 years, that's all I've done."
The current population of 76 langurs represents a growth of 19 over the past five years.

However, Neahga Leonard, the project's director, has said that things are still "very fragile" because of the limited population size and the constant dispersal and disturbance caused by humans.
He said that an increase in tourists and a lack of proper tourism management had led to the recurring invasion of the langurs' habitat on Cat Ba Island, despite the fact that the animals had been living in a protected area since 2006.

"Tourist boats come along with noise and pollution, creating extreme stress for the langurs."
The staff claims that the langurs have retreated into caves multiple times because of the noise and disturbance caused by humans.
On big trees and limestone mountains along the beach, langurs can be found playing and foraging for food, which includes a wide range of fruits and leaves in Cat Ba island.

The Langur' family is on the top of the mountain.
The only time you'll find them in the caves is when it's time to sleep. A female golden-headed langur only gives birth to one baby every six months, and she lives another 25 years on average.
The species is considered to be in a critical state of extinction by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
From 1.5 million in 2020 to 2.8 million in 2019, the year that Covid broke out, the number of tourists visiting the Cat Ba Langur increased every year.
